There are so many types of hair extensions out there it can be hard to know what to choose. Some types are better at blending in with your hair and others are crazy low maintenance, and some are just the right fit for your budget. Read on to find out which extensions are right for you!

Skin weft or tape hair extensions

Skin weft hair extensions (also known as tape extensions) are a popular choice, and many people even use this method at home. For tape extensions, you adhere large sections of hair under your natural hair (usually close to the root). This hides the spot where your hair ends and the extensions begin, making it one of the most natural-looking types of extension. If you’re going for a natural look you’ll want skin weft extensions that closely match your own hair color, but you might also go for a trendy two-tone or hombre style. Either way, skin weft extensions will last a while (one to two months with proper care), and usually only require monthly maintenance.

Micro bead hair extensions

Another easy option is micro bead hair extensions. Easily done at home or in a salon, micro bead extensions involve threading your hair through small beads at the end of the hair extension. One drawback to micro bead extensions is that they require more frequent maintenance (such as tightening), but they’re easy to replace if needed and won’t damage your natural hair.

Fusion hair extensions

There are also two different types of “fusion” hair extension methods, where a type of heat- or cold-activated glue is used rather than tape or beads. In both of these methods an adhesive is applied to join the extension to your hair (near the root), then heat (or ultrasound for cold fusion) is applied make the hair stick. What’s the advantage of fusion hair extensions? They last for up to 6 months! You’ll need a professional to apply them, though, so it’s not as simple as other types of extensions.

Clip-in hair extensions

Finally, you might consider using clip-in hair extensions if you need an easy hairstyle pick-me-up. Although not as natural looking as some of the other methods detailed above, hair clip extensions have the advantage of being the most convenient: you simply clip them to your natural hair near the root and you're done! This has the added benefit of not damaging your natural hair at all, and clip-in hair extensions can be easily replaced if you would like a change of color or style.

How much do hair extensions cost?

The last thing you need to know to pick the right type of hair extensions is how much they’re going to cost.

Hair extensions vary greatly in price depending on which type you use, how long the extension is, and how many tracks you want to have put in. Price also depends on whether you want synthetic hair or real human hair. Although real human hair is more expensive, it also looks the most natural and will blend more readily with your own hair. You can also purchase tracks on your own and have professionals install them, which can end up being cheaper. Either way you’ll have to check some local salons, but prices usually start as low as $40 and go up to $300 or more.
